The next phase of design and power
If you don’t like the current BMW design language, that may change with the arrival of its biggest change to date: the next design era, known as Neue Klasse. Its first model will be the fully electric iX3, which will debut at the BMW Group Keynote on September 5th. BMW tells us that the Neue Klasse platform is a modular, EV-first architecture that will also underpin its future models, so expect this design language to be pervasive among electric BMWs.
The iX3 will slot between the compact iX1 (not currently available in the U.S.) and the larger, recently refreshed iX SUV. It targets key rivals, including the Tesla Model Y, the Mercedes-Benz EQC successor, the Audi Q6 e-tron, and the Lexus RZ. BMW’s goal is to offer a premium EV with both the performance credibility and the brand cachet that buyers expect, while also competing directly in the most essential luxury EV segment in the U.S. It also aims to set its EV line apart from the rest of the BMW pack.
A new foundation in the Neue Klasse
The iX3 will be the first SUV to ride on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, but the new design language was first debuted on the Vision Dee and the Vision Neue Klasse coupe. Unlike BMW’s current EVs, which are adapted from internal-combustion platforms, the Neue Klasse is explicitly designed for EVs. This change promises improved packaging, enhanced efficiency, and seamless integration of cutting-edge technology. Expect a flatter floor, optimized aerodynamics, and more interior space thanks to the dedicated EV layout. The iX3 might have “X3” in its name, but it will bear no resemblance to the brand’s best-selling gasoline vehicle.
While official U.S. specifications have not yet been finalized, BMW has hinted that the iX3 will feature the company’s sixth-generation eDrive motors and new battery packs, with production scheduled to begin in 2025 and sales to follow in 2026.
Technology and interior
Inside, the iX3 will showcase BMW’s next-gen digital interface, likely featuring a large curved display and a streamlined control layout. The Neue Klasse interior design emphasizes minimalism, sustainable materials, and advanced software integration. Expect cutting-edge materials, new ambient lighting styles, and advanced driver-assistance systems that approach hands-free capability on highways. BMW is also working on a next-generation iDrive system with greater personalization and over-the-air update capacity. The look of the concept won’t be a direct translation to the production model, but will most likely carry over some details. Personally, I hope the strip of driving data at the base of the windshield makes it past this concept stage.
Final thoughts
With its Neue Klasse underpinnings, advanced technology, and what’s promised to be BMW’s hallmark driving dynamics, the iX3 is one of the most exciting EV debuts to come along in a while.
